Guernsey’s 2010/11 winning company .Ink were chosen to represent the Channel Islands at the South East regional Finals held earlier in the year.

The team represented the Islands well but unfortunately the competition was very strong and they did not come away with any awards. No doubt the 2011/12 teams will want to improve on the success and pick up awards or win the regional finals. Remember Guernsey has had Regional and National winners that have gone on the represent the UK in Europe.

A GROUP of potential publishers swept the board last night at the Guernsey Young Enterprise Awards.

Company Dot.Ink made up of local teenagers designed a magazine for schools as well as holding disco events won four awards at the ceremony last night. These included best company, best managing director and the award for IT innovation.

Sixteen year old Rosie Armstrong was the MD and said that despite arguments and the setbacks it was worth all the hard work.

The company set out to bring pupils from different schools together which they achieved through the magazine and the discos. One of the benefits of taking part in the Guernsey Young Enterprise project is that it helps young people develop soft skills and become more confident dealing with each other and adults in the business environment.

All of the five company’s had to give a presentation and were all of a very high standard, they were all creative and engaging and in some cases very entertaining

Another highlight of the evening was the presentation given by Team 21 who were part of the programme for special needs students. Dot.Ink will now compete against the top Jersey YE firm for the right to represent the Channel Islands in the regional finals.

PART of the profits of a Young Enterprise Group have been donated to help refurbish the children ward play room at the Princess Elizabeth.

Carpe Diem which comprised 21 members donated £273.67, they had focused their business on helping young people which included producing calendars with local students photography, holding a quiz night and selling sweets!

Guernsey Young enterprise is aimed at 15 to 19 year-olds who set up a company to come up with innovative ideas and raise money. It aims to give the people involved a sense of achievement and responsibility.

With the room being made ready and the toys on order it wont be long before life for the children on the Frossard Ward gets a little bit better thanks to some enterprising teenagers.

Members of the area board will visit your school at the start of the year to give a brief presentation and to encourage you to take part in YE. They will explain the whole process, the achievements and successes, they will also hand out application forms for you to complete and hand back to your school.

This is an activity run outside of school and not with teachers, all the advisers are volunteers from the business community and they will help and guide your company. It is great fun and you will make new friends and if you are lucky and work hard you will hopefully also come out of it financially better off. We can assure you though that you will develop skills that are not necessarily available to you in your normal school setting.

Young Enterprise succeeds through the commitment of its volunteer business advisers. These are people from all walks of life who are prepared to give their time – roughly two hours a week – for the duration of the company (runs from September/October to around Easter). They can make a real difference to a company and the future potential of the students they support.

Each company has between 2-4 business advisers who offer advice and guidance and provide a resource for the company. Their role is not to run the company but to oversee their activities and ensure that legal and safety guidelines are adhered to.

You will play a critical role in shaping the future business leaders of the Island, the path may sometimes be frustrating but it is also hugely rewarding as you watch Achievers grow in confidence, skills and maturity.

Young Enterprise really does need your help!
